John Hauge May 16, am. Nicole May 16, pm. The song is about more than the person who inspired it. I have been in a horrible, horrible streak of typos and missteps in my writing. These things seem to come in waves. I appreciate everyone fighting through it.
Ariane September 5, pm. Sinn May 16, pm. Not based on attack of who she is as a person or artist, but an interview trying to understand her as those two important inclusive-yet-separate entities. Triggerman, you should try to get in touch with her people and get an interview. You never know though. Yoggy May 17, am. Trig, you should try to email her. Would love to hear the interview with her.
Not impossible to be honest, since she answered a blogger out of the blue before she started touring the US last year. Britt May 21, pm. Hey Britt! Anyway…i agree with Tay.. SH May 24, pm. Hopefully you could end the interview with something to the effect of.. Swift, why do YOU have to be so mean?? Kinda like me thinking i spit out some gum that brad pitt stepped on 10 minutes later! CapnWain May 17, pm. When I was a kid, I liked the Monkees.
My music tastes matured and expanded, but the introduction to all that wonderful new music came from four guys hired by TV execs to pretend to be the American Beatles. Better to emulate her than a lot of garbage out there. I actually enjoy Taylor Swifts albums. For the music that she performs she is one of the best at it. Very few artists in any genre write songs with more heart in them than her.
Trig, I havent done any search on it, but I cant imagine that you are the only person to write a blog that constantly blasts her when an album or song or performance came out.
Surely there must be more who would pop up on her google list as well. Perhaps it is a third person who went constantly over the line personally attacking her.
Perhaps it is you, but I dont think we will ever know the answer. Keep up the good work, always enjoy reading your site. The Triggerman May 18, pm.
Right now it behooves her to not tell because it can only help the intrigue and interest into the song. I do think there are other possibilities out there, but just as Taylor Swift had signed up her name for Google alerts, so had I.
Not every blog is big enough, or optimized to work with Google alerts. The Google alerts quotient I think is very insightful. But he definitely crossed the line, way farther than I ever did. The Triggerman May 20, pm. I just noticed too that when you go to taylorswiftcantsing. My guess is the dude let it expire. Goldencountry May 19, am. I applauded the guy for having the balls to create a page that will have the wrath of her fan base. The Hillbilly Muslim May 19, pm.
I love the article Triggerman. I do somewhat respect Taylor Swift for atleast attempting to be somewhat wholesome role model for little girls to aspire too.
Not like their drugged up whore ex beauty queen Miley Cyrus leading all our daughters to next decade to total whoredom. I think the problem is when grown adults confuse kiddy buble gum music to legitimate music. Thats why I like it when you come in and tell everyone how it is. Karen May 22, pm. CJ May 24, am. The Triggerman May 24, pm. It may be years before we know. Sinn May 25, pm. It seems to me CU and Lady A. Is it jealousy by these other big lights in the music industry or what, that provokes these sorts of crude, back-handed compliments and jabs.
As for the person suggesting Trig ask Taylor about the chorus lines in the song.. I read a very intelligent break-down of the song somewhere not long after it came out. CJ May 28, am. Her singling out Taylor is what baffles me, that and that she deemed it necessary to mention Taylor is a pop singer. So many artists delve into pop country now, you mention Underwood and Lady Antebellum among those. Backhanded compliment, you guys are right.
Miranda makes good music I do not question that. And this baffling little comment on Taylor. SH May 28, am. I must agree with anyone who has commented on taylors attributes as a positive role model in and outside of her music as well. VA Bluegrass May 26, pm. Trig, your posts on Taylor Swift are terrific. Gaga is basically Madonna re-invented for the new century. What other female country or pop artist has EVER done that? Was he right? Nobody said Taylor was a Disney Princess.
She gets angry, like any young woman, and she vents. Swift and Gaga are 3 years apart in age. I think you think Taylor is younger than she is. If you are saying Taylor is the voice of generation Z meaning the 8 — year-olds then the voice of generation Y would be the Spice Girls or the Backstreet Boys, not Gaga or anyone else who is just coming along now when these people are in their 20s.
You are not really making much of a distinction here. What is wrong with sexuality in music? These people are all writing about different aspects of real life. Same argument applies to your critiquing Gaga for making dance music. It seems you are making the argument that Swift deserves more credit simply because she writes a different style of music and uses more limited scope of lyrical subjects.
I also think you might be surprised to learn Gaga has more international appeal than Swift, but no matter. I agree with him on that. To people who are not her die hard fans, I think she seemed legitimate.
But in that setting, among professionals, tanking like she did, it just made her come across as inexperienced, unprofessional, etc. The Grammys performance along with most of her other televised performances demonstrated that she has most definitely been doing some faking too.
And certainly nobody has done it in such a way as to strike a chord with so many other females of all ages a and quite a few men as well.. Or they try to be as punk as any guy…punk-rock, leather jackets, cigs, f-bombs every other verse. Taylor has given a voice to the average girl, as she grows. Her fans admire her for her prodigy-like lyrical gifts, her soul-baring honesty, her eye for details, her ear for memorable phrases and hooks, and her passion and emotion.
She is first and foremost a story-teller and a communicator. NOT a dance music-artist. Not a blues-belter. The kind of artist who expresses exactly what her fans feel, in words that ring true. Jan, I have to address some misrepresentations in your last 2 posts. Where she does name people, they tend to be boys she crushed on Stephen, Drew , whose biggest failing was being oblivious to her worship — hardly ridicule. She has never confirmed the targets of her angriest songs.
That a guy told her forever and always? That a much older guy played mind games with a naive year-old?
I have in front of me the Bob Lefsetz letter on the Grammys, from Feb. In one fell swoop, Swift consigned herself to the dustbin of teen phenoms …. Songs are where Swift expresses what she really feels. And it ends by very astutely advising him of the path where bitterness and anger will lead. The Grammy performance, in all probability caused by a faulty earpiece anyway, is just irrelevant. If anything, that momentary failure just makes her all the more vulnerable and real to her fans.
Hidden message : I thought you got me. The video begins with Swift and her band playing a banjo, all dressed in vintage-inspired clothes. The stage is set up like a front yard of a farmhouse. Then, Swift is shown being tied to the tracks by a villain, similar to the song's artwork. The villain and his friend laugh as she sits there helpless.
But later in the song she escapes as the two people sleep, drunk and tired. However, Swift and the others are hardly the only victims in the video. A montage of Swift plucking away at her banjo is shown alternately throughout the video with scenes of a boy being bullied while reading a fashion magazine in a locker room by the football team, and a girl, wearing a fast-food uniform, who is being made fun of by her peers with her job promotion. Another cut-scene shows a girl who was not welcomed by the girls to sit with the popular clique at lunch, and had to eat lonely in the girls' washroom.
The next scene shows that the stage is transformed into a bright and ritzy stage, with the singer all dazzled up in a sparkly flapper gown performing in the big leagues. After the bridge of the song, it is revealed that the boy reading the fashion magazine is now a famous fashion designer; the fast food girl saves up for college and is a big-time executive.
The final scene shows the other girl sitting as an audience watching and applauding as Swift finishes performing. I get it that not everyone is going to like everything that you do, and I get that no matter what, you're going to be criticized for something.
