After graduation, Nutt became a graduate assistant for Oklahoma State under head coach Jimmy Johnson.

In , Nutt returned to Arkansas and became a graduate assistant coach under former coach Lou Holtz. In the spring of , Nutt was hired by Arkansas State University as a full-time assistant coach but he spent only four months there before returning to Oklahoma State that summer as a wide receivers coach.
