Chicago has nothing on Minot when it comes to wind. You eventually get used to the wind. You also get to know the importance of having a limitless supply of paper weights.
You also learn how to walk while leaning so you can stay upright. Yeah, living in Minot literally and figuratively blows. It will remain a frozen wasteland until the following year. Working on the B was probably the most unexciting thing you could do in the military to me — someone who had no desire to be a mechanic, nor had any mechanical aptitude at all. The plane itself was old, slow, ugly, often broken, and like many of the Master Sergeants nearing retirement, were in dire need of disposal in the bone yard.
The B may be the singular reason for Global Warming. Al Gore would shit his pants. In true military fashion, the government would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars maintaining the giant flying turd, which has miraculously staved off being decommissioned for 30 years. My purpose in life had never seemed more meaningless than when I realized I had become the human equivalent of an ant. I could drone on and on about my terrible experiences; a dorm mate borrowing my car and totaling it in an accident caused by black ice in freaking September!!
Everyone helps everyone, at any time, day or night, regardless of the situation you find yourself in. That is a learned trait I carry with me to this day. Some of the relationships that were formed, are the relationships that formed me into who I am today. It may sound cliche, but the adversity we all experienced in that frozen, desolate place DID indeed build character.
That might actually be the case…. This post is dedicated to Mathew Tunnell. Matt was my best friend from Minot, and was taken from us far too young. Matt passed away May 26, , just before his 23rd birthday, due to a tragic motorcycle accident as he traveled to Mississippi for his monthly weekend National Guard duty. Those that knew Matt, knew what a gentle, kind and giving soul he was.
He left behind a two-year old daughter, Haiden, who will never know just how much she was loved by Matt.

Indeed, planning ahead is key. Needless to say, the supermarket is the first stop. Stocking on milk, bread, and a few dinners to last a couple of days is what most people do. However, it is also vital to keep an emergency kit in the car, made of blankets, bottles of water, high-energy snacks, lighters, and a small tea candle.
While for many families who accompany their service members to Minot AFB, these freezing temperatures can be rather scary and overwhelming, locals are seemingly nonchalant about Old Man Winter. I find these temperatures to be exhilarating. When you walk outside, and lose your breath for those first few seconds, it gives you a little pep in your step and a glimpse of human strength!
