However, my local grocery store hides it on the bottom shelves of the produce section of all places. You can also find it online; this is the brand I purchase on Amazon:. There are many types of wild bird seed, and only specific varieties will work for mushroom cultivation.
You want wild bird seed that mostly consists of millet and milo; this type usually contains sunflower seeds and cracked corn in addition to the millet and milo. The sunflower seeds are easy to remove, and the crack corn isn't an issue. Wild bird seed is an excellent choice for grain spawn because of the many inoculation points. Meaning the mycelium can colonize it faster, and it will mix more evenly in a bulk substrate. WBS isn't perfect; you'll need to clean it, removing sunflower seeds, larger corn kernels, and debris like twigs, stones, etc.
The sunflower seeds could cause a contamination issue if not removed. My neighborhood birds have mush-love for the discarded sunflower seeds and cracked corn. A family of cardinals and song sparrows visit my house regularly for the discarded grain. Instead of throwing away the excess, try leaving them outside for the birds; you'll have a fair amount of excess after each batch of spawn. Measure the amount of grain you would like to use and place it in a large pot. A mason jar 1-Quart of dry grain usually yields around 2 jars of spawn.
The measurement isn't an exact science as we will need to remove the sunflower seeds. In a sink, add water to the pot and begin scooping out anything that floats; this will mostly consist of sunflower seeds.
Tip: I use a small mesh strainer that works excellent to collect floaters. After removing the floaters, run your hands through the grains a few times to release any trapped sunflower seeds.
Continue this process until you are left with murky water. Dump the dirty water through a colander or mesh strainer to catch any grain. Then refill the pot with clean water. EM stole my line, again. They colonize very fast. I like to get em colonized quickly. I am using 17 to 20 lbs when I do 75 min.
If I had to do "rocker style", I would go 90 min. I think that the extra pressure affords me a little less time. It's simple thermodynamics after all. While jars are still warm, give them a thorough shake. Some WBS will look wet and stick to sides of jars, this is normal. This will help to redistribute any stray moisture.

To me it's perfect..
Vibration , Sep 11, Majik , Sep 11, Larynx , Sep 11, I never could get the simmer to work. Thanks everyone for the input and yeah i have been a longterm follower of docs wbs tek Its just those fine details such as using a fan still having some kernels stick to the sides and such that i was looking for as i was drying them til nothing would stick and shit like that. I have had a slow leak in my pc i have been noticing and usually able to fix which i hope is tied to the gasket and not warping of the pc but i have a 23 qt mirro i believe it is and it has just a couple inches in one spot where for some reason instead of curving completely over the gasket it leaves a small part visible and this is where i'm getting some escaping steam but my rocker still rocks so i'm taking it that it is still at a 15psi since it still rocks regardless of the slow leak and idk maybe the openiing is meant for that?
Anyways i will buy a new gasket and see where that gets me and i left my grains a little wetter this time to see if this aids in my colonization. Still unsure wether to fruit in the tub in another fc or turn it upside down and remove it from the minitub and fruit as if it were a cake if anyone has any recomendations on that as well?
