How can you predict when you will ovulate? What tools do you need to take your basal body temperature? Where can you get a basal thermometer? Sperm can hang around for a few days waiting for the egg to show up. Findings suggest that accuracy can range anywhere from 76 to 88 percent. There are lots of things that can affect your basal body temperature other than ovulation, including stress, illness or even drinking alcohol.

Anything that messes with normal sleep patterns — from shift work and traveling across different time zones to plain old insomnia — can have an impact too. There are also logistics to consider. Remembering to do that the second you wake up before doing anything else might be tough. Prefer to go the smart route? Taking your temperature with a BBT thermometer takes about five minutes.

Using a BBT chart is safe, simple and inexpensive. With an accuracy rate of 76 to 88 percent, BBT charts are considerably less reliable than ovulation test strips.

And keeping an accurate BBT chart calls for some serious commitment. What to Expect follows strict reporting guidelines and uses only credible sources, such as peer-reviewed studies, academic research institutions and highly respected health organizations. Once you have 2 or more months of charts to review, predicting ovulation for your next cycle will become easier because you'll begin to notice which day of your cycle is your ovulation day based on your thermal shift. When glancing at your BBT chart you will see a spike in temperature days after ovulation.

This is an indicator of your bodies thermal shift from the time before ovulation happens to the post-ovulation phase. The most common pattern is the standard thermal shift. This is the one we will discuss in this article. The standard thermal shift is when you notice a series of low temps and then an obvious "shift" of at least two-tenths of a degree, indicating ovulation has happened.

Your temperatures will remain at a higher level until the end of that cycle, when your temperatures will dip again and you will get your period unless of course you are pregnant which we'll talk more about next. If you are trying to conceive you'll want to consider having intercourse 2 or 3 days before you ovulate.

Once you identify ovulation the two-week wait. Your temps will stay high until they drop again. Once your temps rise up for at least 3 days and stay elevated, you'll know you've ovulated. You must take your temperature before you get out of bed, talk, eat, drink, have sex, or smoke in order to get an accurate reading. The basal thermometer should be inserted for a full five minutes, and the reading should be recorded within one-tenth of a degree.

You can get a basal body temperature chart from your gynecologist. Keep your chart and a pencil by your bed and record your temperature within one-tenth of a degree each day.

As your chart evolves you'll begin to see a pattern. Each person's pattern is different: some rise suddenly, while others increase more gradually. Patterns can also vary from cycle to cycle. When your basal body temperature rises higher than the temperatures you've recorded in the past six days, and stays at this level or increases for at least three days, it's likely that ovulation has occurred.

In general the temperature range after ovulation is between 97 to 99 degrees — at least two-tenths of a degree greater than your temperature was during the previous week. There are factors that could cause your temperature to increase, thereby affecting the accuracy of your chart.
